by Leigh Bardugo
This book is set in the same world as Bardugo's Shadow and Bone trilogy, but takes place a couple of years after those events. Kaz Brekker and his crew are part of a criminal gang in the mercantile city of Ketterdam, where they scam and grift money out of respectable businessmen. They take on an extremely daring and dangerous heist that promises huge rewards in return for the equally large risks.
Six of Crows is a very good heist story. The plot is quite clever and has several twists and turns, with just the right amount of suspense and action. Plus, Bardugo does a great job of using flashbacks to elaborate everyone's backstories without undermining the momentum of the plot. The characters and their interactions are also terrific. Kaz is a a great example of a morally grey character: extremely clever and devoid of most scruples yet capable of real loyalty and even feeling for his compatriots. Inej was my favorite: a highly skilled spy and thief, she has hidden depths and motivations. I also really liked Nina for her forthright enjoyment of the pleasures of life and her fierceness.
