A Kiss for Midwinter
by Courtney Milan

This novella is an interlude in Milan's Brothers Sinister series. Kind and cheerful Lydia Charingford has a tragic past: as a teenager she was seduced by an older married man, became pregnant, and then had a miscarriage. Luckily, this part of her history has remained largely secret, known only to her family, her best friend Minnie, and the doctor and his assistant who treated her. Jonas Grantham was that assistant, and is now a doctor himself. He re-encounters Lydia years after their initial meeting and falls desperately in love with her. Lydia is attracted to Jonas and grows to really like him despite his plain-speaking, sarcasm, and dark humor. But she is still healing from her past and struggles with her feelings for him. Luckily, they do get their happily ever after.
It's amazing just how much Milan can do in such a short book. She manages to create a lovely slow-burn romance in under a hundred pages, while not stinting on the banter. Jonas is such a great hero - he's much more self-aware, forthright, and sarcastic than most heroes of the genre. I love how respectful he is of Lydia's space and feelings. Lydia is so admirable. She is determined to move beyond her past but still struggles to deal with all her feelings about it. THey make an unexpected but wonderful couple.
