The Governess Affair
by Courtney Milan

This novella is a prequel to Milan's Brothers Sinister series. Serena Barton is a former governess who was raped by the Duke of Clermont (the rape is very much off-screen and handled very sensitively). Finding herself out of a job, pregnant, and unemployable, Serena sets out to get restitution from the Duke. The Duke assigns his man of business Hugo Marshall to take care of the situation. As Serena and Hugo spar, they discover that they like and are attracted to each other. In the end, Serena gets both the restitution she wants and a love she didn't expect.
I very much enjoyed The Governess Affair. Milan continues to be excellent at handling her characters' past trauma with sensitivity and insight. The banter between Serena and Hugo is terrific, especially in the notes they exchange. The happy ending feels very earned. I also liked reading about a heroine and hero who were more working class and thus had to think about how they would support themselves.
