by Max Gladstone
Last Exit is the story of a group of five friends who meet at Yale and learn how to travel between alternate earths. In those other realities, they have adventures and try to turn back the tide of the rot they find infesting the multiverse. Except it all eventually goes wrong and they lose one of their own. Ten years later, they reunite for one last attempt at saving the world.
This book was creepy and apocalyptic and hopeful all at once. It's about trying to save the world when you have no idea what you're doing and perhaps not everything is what you think it is. It's about America and the myths that build and destroy it. It's about flawed people and their complex relationships with each other. It's about what it really takes to fix and heal the world. It's a deep and rich book that I will keep thinking about for a long time.
