by Seanan McGuire
In this sequel to Every Heart a Doorway, we get the backstory for Jack and Jill, twin sisters who went to the Moors, one of the less nice otherworlds, where villages are ruled by vampires, and mad scientists practice their arts out in the wilderness. Their story is creepy and heartbreaking and a chilling gothic fable. It's also a meditation on the damage bad parenting and the enforcement of rigid roles leaves behind, and on the way connections between siblings can endure even in the midst of a lot of dysfunction. The prose is beautifully atmospheric and the characters are compelling. I thoroughly enjoyed this and loved getting an up close look at a kid's experience in an otherworld.
