by Judith Tick
I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. Rather than just doing a laundry-list like survey of the composers, Tick goes into the social and musical milieu for women musicians in 19th century America and traces the development of professionalism for women in music. This way, the achievements of each woman highlighted can be seen in the cultural context of the times. It was fascinating in its illumination of women I had not previously know about and of the constraints under which they worked.
