Every Heart a Doorway
by Seanan McGuire

This short novel takes place at a school for teenagers who have returned from the magical worlds they once walked into. Each of them is trying to adjust to the mundane world again, while also seeking a way back to that magical place. The school provides a refuge for them, a place where they are believed and understood. Nancy, recently returned from an Underworld that valued stillness, is the newest student, and we see the story and school mostly through her eyes. Shortly after she arrives, students start turning up dead, threatening the school and its inhabitants.
I loved this book. It's beautifully written and has such a wonderful atmosphere that is equal parts fairy-tale, creepy, and surreal. The characters are terrific - diverse along several axes, fully realized even if they are bit parts, and fascinating. I like how McGuire subtly explores gender and issues around conformity and expectations.
