My sister finally convinced me to join her in reading romance novels, and she recommended this one strongly. She was right
The Duchess War was a delight. Minnie is a quiet wallflower, preferring to stay in the background, hiding her scandalous past. She is also extremely intelligent and perceptive. Robert, Duke of Clermont, is a secret radical determined to use his wealth and privilege for good. When Minnie figures out what Robert is up to, he realizes she is more than what she seems. As they attempt to figure out each other's secrets, they fall in love.
There were so many things I liked about this book. Minnie is a terrific heroine - smart, witty, resourceful, yet with complexities and vulnerabilities that make her relatable. Robert is charming and sexy yet is not without self-doubt and awkwardness. The witty banter between them is fabulous, as are the more emotional and tender conversations. Their story had just the right amount of conflict, hurdles, and angst to make their happy ending emotionally satisfying.
