Siege and Storm
by Leigh Bardugo

Siege and Storm is the second book in the Shadow and Bone trilogy. The book starts out with Alina and Mal having successfully escaped Ravka and taking the first steps towards creating a new life, only to be pulled back into Ravka's plight and the machinations of the Darkling. She and Mal find and unlikely ally in a daring privateer and the clever second son of Ravka's king.
I enjoyed this second installment as much as the first. The plot was exciting and included a couple of surprising reversals of fortune. Mal and Alina's relationship becomes more fraught. The stakes are higher all around. Alina learns more about her power and also starts to enjoy having that power, which is a source of both confidence and temptation. I loved Nikolai. I desperately wish Mal and Alina would learn how to more fully accept the changes in each other and figure out how to manage a relationship in the midst of trying to save the world. I can't wait to see how they save it, and I hope the price isn't too high for either of them.

As a side note, I can't fathom shipping Alina and the Darkling. Yes, he's brooding and sexy. But in this book we see how cruel and tyrannical he really is. Any relationship with him would be massively unhealthy, given how manipulative and controlling he is.
