This quiet, lovely novella covers three generations of an African American family based in Florida, near the titular landmark. It starts in the late 1930s, with Mayola Williams, a teenager who starts work at the fancy whites-only resort at the springs, just as a film crew arrives to work on a new Tarzan movie. It continues with Mayola's son Levi, and concludes with her grand-daughter Anna. The writing is beautiful, especially in the opening that perfectly captures the feel of a hot summer day and the later scenes of Levi swimming in the Wakulla river and springs.Duncan and Klages address issues of segregation and racism in brief but powerful scenes throughout the story, and touch on issues of the surface versus the depths and the relationships between the real and the imagined.
