The Witness for the Dead
by Katherine Addison

The Witness for the Dead is set in the same world as and takes place after the events of The Goblin Emperor, but it is not a sequel. The Witness for the Dead takes place in the provincial city of Amalo, and is told by Thara Celahar, a Witness for the Dead (and a minor character from The Goblin Emperor). Thara lives a modest and lonely life, serving the common people by communicating with the recently dead to resolve disputes, and investigate mysterious deaths. Thus, Thara finds himself investigating two murder mysteries, one involving the death of an opera singer and the other a string of poisoned brides.
I very much enjoyed The Witness for the Dead. The characters are terrific. Thara is very thoughtful and relatable, and I liked spending time with him. The secondary characters are also great, from the exuberant opera composer and director to the forthright airship factory worker. Both of the mysteries were very satisfying in their working out and solutions. I also just love this world, with its nuanced manners, extensive tea drinking, and hint of steampunk. I am delighted that there will be another book chronicling Thara's adventures coming out soon.
