Mexican Gothic
by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Mexican Gothic starts off very solidly in the gothic novel genre: in 1950 Mexico, Noemi travels to High Place, a remote old mansion, in response to a troubling letter from her cousin Catalina. There, Noemi finds a crumbling, mold riddled house, strange dreams and visions, dark family secrets, eccentric, forbidding relatives, and that Catalina's new husband is pretty shitty. And then the plot takes a turn into straight-up horror.
I really enjoyed this book - its combination of gothic and horror works perfectly. Noemi is a great heroine - a socialite, she at first seems kind of frivolous, but turns out to have a strong backbone, a sharp wit, and a lot of courage. The atmosphere was very creepy and the plot has some nice surprises, especially concerning the horror elements. This book is a perfect read for late fall.
