by Catherynne M. Valente
This sequel to The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland... was just about as delightful. This time September returns to Fairyland about a year after her first visit to find that her shadow that was left behind has taken over Fairyland-Below and is causing plenty of mischief in both halves of Fairyland. So in addition to a portal fantasy, this book is also a trip to the underworld.
This book is a lot more wide-ranging than the first. September travels to many more regions of Fairyland-Below and encounters a larger cast of characters. We also learn a lot more about how Fairyland works. Valente also explores more complex themes around the parts of ourselves we hide or suppress, autonomy and freedom, and memory and loss. It's all just as clever and delightful as its predecessor.
