The Fated Sky
by Mary Robinette Kowal

This is the sequel to The Calculating Stars, and it is even better than its predecessor. It is a few years after Elma becomes the first woman astronaut, and she is now regularly piloting shuttle flights between the space station and the new moon colony. When the the first mission to Mars is undertaken, Elma becomes one of the crew. This being the early 1960s, even on a long and perilous mission, Elma and her fellow astronauts must contend with the hurdles caused by bigotry in addition to the dangers of space travel.
I loved this book even more than the first in the series. The stakes are higher, not just because of the risky Mars mission, but also because the isolation and intimacy of a small crew living on and running a spaceship together brought the characters and their relationships into tighter focus. I don't want to give spoilers, so I'll just say that this book made me both laugh and cry more than once. It was magnificent.
