by Susan Hill
This short novel is a creepy ghost story set in a remote English village where young lawyer Arthur Kipps has gone to begin settling the affairs of Mrs. Drablow, an elderly recluse who has just died. At the Drablow house, Arthur encounters the eerie figure of a woman in black, as well as unexplained noises and other strange phenomena. While I didn't find The Woman in Black particularly scary, I did enjoy it a lot. The plot is refreshingly straightforward, the setting is fantastic, and it's all eerie and atmospheric. It's the perfect thing to read in a cozy chair with a cup of tea on a dreary day.
