Sigh, Gone: A Misfit's Memoir of Great Books, Punk Rock, and the Fight to Fit In
by Phuc Tran

I'm not usually into reading memoirs, but this one came highly recommended by my sister. Sigh, Gone is Phuc Tran's memoir of his childhood and adolescence in very white suburban Pennsylvania. The child of Vietnamese refugees, Tran struggles to fit in and find his place and identity in a twon where he is so different from everyone else. He finds his way through punk rock and literature.
So much of this book resonated so hard with me. Although I did not have to deal with racism, I, too, was a misfit child of a a refugee immigrant stuck in a homogenous suburb who turned to books and punk music. Tran's prose is lovely and evocative, filled with honesty and compassion for himself and the people around him. I especially loved the way he connected his own experiences with the themes of the literature he was devouring during his high school years.
