Head On
by John Scalzi

This is the sequel to Lock In, and was even better. Since it's the second book, the premise and world needed less explanation, allowing Scalzi to explore Chris and Vann's characters more. This time the case involves a series of mysterious deaths among the players and league administration of Hilketa, a Haden-dominated sport that is a more violent variant of soccer played with robots. I loved the way Scalzi spun out the mystery and slowly upped the stakes. The pacing is perfect, and I loved the way Chris and Vann banter and work together. Along the way, Scalzi delves into some issues of disability rights and also touches on aspects of fame and what economic desperation can drive people to. It was a very fun read, and I really hope Scalzi writes more in this series.
