by Jonathan Carr
This book is a straightforward biography of Mahler, with little musical analysis. Carr tells the story of the composer's life in an entertaining and even-handed way. He is especially balanced when describing Mahler's personality and the nature and vicissitudes of Mahler's marriage to Alma. While Carr doesn't provide any extensive or technical analysis of Mahler's works, he does provide engaging descriptions and interesting musings on the degree of relationship between the music and the events or conditions of Mahler's life. This is a very good introduction to Mahler.
