The Cold Eye is the second book in The Devil's West. Picking up directly where Silver on the Road left off. When Isobel discovers a herd of buffalo slaughtered and left to rot, she is drawn to a region where the wildlife has fled and the land itself is silent. Here she encounters the after-effects of dangerous magic which pose a deep and dangerous threat to the Territory, as do the people behind the working of this magic. Pursuit of both the cause and solution for this threat greatly tests Isobel's powers and bring both her and Gabriel into contact with some of the stranger aspects of the Territory.
The world-building remains excellent, and I really enjoyed Isobel's character development as she gains better understanding of her power and who and what she is. The pacing was not quite as tight as it could have been, and there could have been just a bit more clarity around the nature of the main threat and what Isobel does to deal with it. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable read and I'm eager to find out where this is all going.
