by Kevin Karnes
This short handbook examines Pärt's groundbreaking 1977 piece Tabula Rasa, one of his first major works in the tinntinabuli style. Despite this book's brevity, it is very wide ranging. In addition to analyzing the piece itself, Karnes covers Pärt's development of tinntinabuli and it's place in his compositional trajectory, the Soviet and international reception of Tabula Rasa, and its relationship to the 20th century musical avant-garde. I especially liked the analysis chapter, as Karnes clearly explains several structural features of the piece in a way that actually enhacned the way I listen to this beautiful piece.
