The Night Circus
by Erin Morgenstern

I am quite sorry to have finished this novel, as it was very absorbing and enchanting. Set around the turn of the 20th century, the story centers around Celia and Marco, two young people trained as magicians who are bound into a competition that only one of them is meant to survive. The venue for this competition is a travelling circus/carnival that contains not only typical circus performances but also exhibits whose magic is real. When Marco and Celia fall in love, the nature of the game jeopardizes both their relationship and the circus itself.
But the story is just there to give shape and purpose to the book. The Night Circus is really all about setting and atmosphere. Morgenstern creates a wonderful world in her circus, populated by interesting people and amazing things, and makes it so vivid that you will keep wishing or hoping that it could be real. Her prose is gorgeous and evocative without being overstuffed - it's all just enough to make it all feel alive and true.
