by Ellis Peters
This is the twelfth of the Cadfael mysteries, and, while enjoyable, it felt kind of routine. The new priest for the Foregate parish of Shrewsbury turns out to be a rigid and unsympathetic man who quickly makes himself vastly unpopular and unloved among his flock. When he is found drowned in the mill pond, there are all too many who have cause to murder him. In the course of so0lving this mystery, Cadfael runs into the usual pair of star-crossed lovers, a likable youth, and a person falsely suspected of the murder. While the resolution was somewhat unusual, the rest of the story was pretty much a typical Cadfael mystery.
