by Adrian Thomas
Górecki is best known these days for his Symphony No. 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs), but there is a lot more to his music than that. Thomas looks at Górecki's entire career (at least through 1996, when this book was written). While he does give some biographical background, Thomas' entire focus is on Górecki's music and his development as a composer. This book is thus full of fascinating and insightful analyses of Górecki's major pieces and along the way illustrates the ways in which he incorporated various 20th century trends and techniques without ever becoming entirely beholden to any of them.
