Actually, that's one of the things I really like about Beethoven: he wrote a few clunkers along with the works of genius. He sometimes seemed to struggle with his music. These are things that I also have to deal with as a composer (I'm not saying I'm a genius, or Beethoven's equal, though). It makes him seem more human, more reachable, more knowable. Not like that smart-aleck Mozart who was a child prodigy, wrote his first opera at twelve, and supposedly wrote completely in his head and never had to go through drafts. ;)
