Eugene, OR - Part 2
Nov. 22nd, 2004 11:22 pmThis morning went very well, in spite of my lack of prior arrangements and scheduling. It's not even raining today - it's sunny and only slightly chilly. And after a good night's sleep, I feel like myself again.
I started out by going to the Schenkerian Analysis calss, taught by Steve Larson. It was really good. Prof. Larson struck me as being the kind of teacher who truly wants his students to learn and cares how they are doing. He even asked me if I was understanding the material at one point. I was pretty impressed overall by the class.
I had originally planned to go to another class after Schenkerian Analysis, but as I was walking down the hall, I saw Dr. Robert Kyr going into his office, so I took the opportunity to introduce myself. He's a very nice guy. I will be having a brief dinner meeting with him before the composer's forum concert this evening, and then coffee afterward. Thus I appear to be continuing the trend of meals with professors that started at UMKC. This didn't happen last year in Chicago or Baltimore. I hope it's a good sign. I also hope it's a good sign that Dr. Kyr had positive things to say about Dr. Bell.
Dr. Kyr, after learning that my intended secondary area would be ethnomusicology, introduced me to Mark Levy, one of the ethnomusicology professors. He was also quite nice and sat and talked with me about the program. He seemed pleased that I was interested in ethnomusicology and that my interest stemmed from prior exposure to the subject at Wesleyan.
In the process fo finding somwhere to eat lunch, I've been able to see a bit more of Eugene; well at least the area around campus. It's very pleasant - lots of small houses with yards.
