The Green Knight
by Iris Murdoch

Iris Murdoch is an extremely fine writer, and I'm kind of sorry it has taken me this long to discover her. But better late than never. Her writing reminds me somewhat of George Eliot in its psychological probity. This novel was rich and deep, with complex and engaging characters. Although there certainly is a plot, built on both the Biblical story of Cain & Abel and the medieval tale of Gawain and the Green Knight, the book centers more on the characters' moral and psychological dilemmas and their separate and collective journeys from murkiness to clarity.
