I am off to Kansas City, MO bright and early tomorrow morning. Way too bright and early, but at least I'll get there shortly after noon, assuming my flights are on time. I'm visiting and interviewing at the University of Missouri's Conservatory, which is my first choice (for those tuning in late, I am appplying to doctoral programs in music composition). They have some amazing people on their faculty, most notably Chen Yi. And the program looks really good. I just hope I like the city itself.
I'm kind of nervous, but not overly so. First of all, I'm too tired from the fantastic Quest game last weekend to have the energy required to work myself up into a state about this. Second, I'm still feeling pumped and confident from the game. Third, I've been corresponding (via e-mail) with members of the composition faculty since July, and they have been great - friendly, helpful, interested, and responsive. I've still got what seems like a thousand things to do before I go, though. I have to finish assembling my portfolio; I'm bringing it not only for show-and-tell, but also to turn in to the conservatory as part of my application. I have to pack the last few items I will need for travelling, including an umbrella, because weather.com says it's going to rain. I have to pick up a copy of my transcript from Boston Conservatory and drop off recommendation forms for one of my former teachers. Oh yeah, and I really should pay the phone bill before I go.

Knock 'em dead. You are going to be fantastic.

Sadly, that means you will then have to move to KC.

Thanks. Yeah, it would mean being far away. But at least it's not as far as choice #2: U of Oregon. Nothing in this world can be gained without a price. It looks like this is the price I am required to pay for getting my doctorate. And I need that doctorate to live the life I truly want. Sigh. I never really expected this to be easy.

It's not as far as you might think. I went to college in St. Louis and it's a fair hop from there to Chicago and over this-a-way (done it lots)! 2.5 hours from Chicago so maybe 3.5 total? Dr. Kenjari can manage that, no problem.

Don't let the past hold you down, it's here to hold you up!

P.S. I still know gamers out there.
