Book Review
Jun. 19th, 2009 08:50 pmMusic in North India
by George E. Ruckert
This is the first book in my small ethnomusicology study project. During my undergraduate days at Wesleyan, I got plenty of exposure to South Indian music, and even took a class in South Indian rhythm studies. This book provided me with a similar level of exposure to North Indian music. Ruckert explains the basic concepts of rhythm, mode, and structure in North Indian music while also touching on the philosophical and sociological aspects of music in India. Music in North India does an excellent job of making an unfamiliar musical tradition comprehensible and accessible. The accompanying CD of musical examples is also very good and well-integrated with the text.
