I watched the inauguration at work. The administration had put together a lunch buffet and a viewing party in the school's concert hall. Y, E, and I went and got lunch, but returned to the dance department to watch with our students. Y and I had set up an internet feed and a projector in one of the studios, and Y suspended rehearsals between 11:30 and 1:00 so that the students could watch. Y rightly felt that they shouldn't miss history. I turned my back for Rick Warren, but the rest of the ceremony was wonderful. The dancers were cheering and E was crying.
I really liked Obama's speech. I truly do feel more hopeful and like things actually will change in this country (for the better, of course). I especially liked that he pretty explicitly opposed torture and embraced diplomacy and humanitarianism. I also appreciated that in his list of religions, he included non-believers. After several years of increased attempts to explicitly align the government with Christianity, I'm very happy to see a return towards pluralism.
Now let's get on with making things better around here.
