Some movies

On Friday I braved the extreme cold to go to Lawrence of Arabia at the Brattle with
hca, R,
cerridwynn, and
mentalapse. It was an ideal movie to see on a bitterly cold evening, because most of it takes place in the desert, and there are plenty of shots of the hot sun beating down. The only problem with all the footage of the sun, heat, and sand was that I was completely parched by the intermission. It's a terrific movie with gorgeous cinematography and great acting. Peter O'Toole does a magnificent job with the title part. I also enjoyed seeing Alec Guinness (Prince Feisel).Despite Lawrence of Arabia's pop culture reputation as a grand epic adventure movie, it has a much deeper side. The film deals quite pointedly with the issue of colonialism, the interaction of vastly different cultures, and Lawrence's conflicted loyalties.
On Saturday, Other Kenjari and I watched "I Am Legend", the recent Will Smith version. I was kind of surprised at how good it was. I was expecting it to stick within the bounds of action-horror, but it didn't shy away from the heavier aspects of the story. The script and Smith did a great job with depicting the less pretty effects of isolation and loss. I loved how when Robert Neville finally had contact with other people, he clearly didn't quite know how to handle it. Other Kenjari says that this version of the story is more hopeful and less bleak than the source material, but I think that the script writers did a good job of balancing the hope with the horror.

Date: 2009-01-19 07:57 am (UTC)I recently re-watched Lawrence of Arabia for the first time since high school; it amazed me. There's an incredible amount to unpack in it. And an antidote to blizzards as well.
