This and That
Jan. 14th, 2009 09:08 pmI seem to have gotten myself a case of tennis elbow in my right arm, along with a mild recurrence of my usual tendonitis problems. The tendonitis I can pretty much deal with, since I'm used to it cropping up every now and then. But the tennis elbow is really crappy because it's affecting my range of motion in that arm. I can't fully extend the arm and trying to bend it far enough to touch my hand to the shoulder is difficult and painful. Luckily, my boss recommended a really good acupuncturist, Dr. Hou in Brookline. I started a series of weekly visits on Monday and I'm already seeing a little improvement.
Other Kenjari and I bought a new mattress after New Years. A good mattress is surprisingly expensive, but it was worth every penny, especially since I suspect that the old mattress may have been contributing to my arm problems. We're both sleeping much better now. The only problem is that the bed is now so comfortable that it is even harder to get up for work in the morning.
We watched the computer-animated Beowulf last weekend. It was terrible. The animation was good in some parts, but in others looked too much like a video game. And the script was a pretty crappy adaptation of the source material. I was really surprised to find out that Neil Gaiman was involved, but I guess everyone has a bad day once in a while. The whole Grendel's mother as succubus thing just sucked. Maybe it would have worked better if there was some sense that she had an overarching goal or purpose (including being a deliberate agent of chaos) in her seductions and monster-bearing. I was especially disappointed because this version seemed to have some real potential, particularly the good cast and the fact that they attempted to do the whole story, not just the Grendel part. Hopefully, someday someone will make a film version of Beowulf that isn't deeply flawed.
This week's Netflix selection is I Am Legend (the recent Will Smith version). If anyone would like to brave the cold to join us in watching it on Saturday, just RSVP via comments or e-mail.
