Beyond Time: Music by Pozzi Escot, Robert Cogan, and Elliott Carter

Jubilation: String Quartet V in four movements - Pozzi Escot
This quartet conveyed a beautiful sense of urgency and depth. There wasn't much contrast between the movements, but that was fine, because they were all gorgeous. I especially liked the Schnittke-like harmonies.

Aria V for Elliott Carter - Pozzi Escot
The piece consisted of a very free vocalise for soprano over a simple accompaniment of long tones in the cello and a steady pulse in the percussion. The elements combined into a wonderfully compelling whole.

Sonatina V in three movements - Pozzi Escot
Each of the three movements in this piece began with a lovely tonal segment that descended into thornier material. I really liked it and would be interested in seeing a score and trying the piece out for myself.

Piano Sonata in three movements - Elliott Carter
This sonata for solo piano had some charming moments and lovely bits, but it also had moments that seemed overstuffed. I generally find Carter kind of hard to get into, and this piece was no exception - I always feel like I need a minimum of two or three listenings in order to really get it.

Celanportrait/Celan Portrait - Robert Cogan
Despite having been written in 2001, this piece for soprano and piano sounded exactly like the avant-garde music of the 1950s and 1960s. It was very well done, but that style has never been my favorite.

Context/Memories - Version C for two pianos - Robert Cogan
This piece was also quite reminiscent of 1960s modernism. Again, a well-made piece but just not my thing.

You should ask pozzi for a score to the sonatine. she would probably be happy to lend you one. There also may be one in the NEC library...
