by Patrick McCabe
This novel is narrated by Patrick "Pussy" Braden, a young Irish transvestite/transgendered person during the 1960s and 1970s. His voice is flamboyant and witty (perhaps too flamboyant - at times I thought McCabe may have veered into crass stereotype territory), as well as full of hope and longing. During the period the book covers, Ireland was in the midst of the Troubles, and while the violence and fear of those times affects Braden deeply, he never loses his optimism or abandons his search for love and belonging; this gives the book a beautifully nuanced mixture of tragedy and comedy.
