This is the sequel to The Bean Trees, which I read years ago. It is a couple of years after the conclusion of the first book, and now Taylor and Turtle, along with Taylor's mother Alice find themselves in a rather unusual custody battle when it is discovered that Turtle is the daughter of a Cherokee and has a grandfather and extended family living on the tribal land in Oklahoma. Kingsolver does a beautiful job of telling the complicated story and of exploring the ideas about family and belonging that it brings up.
