Harry Potter at the Aquarium
Jun. 26th, 2004 02:47 pmI finally saw Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban last night, on an IMAX screen no less. It was also the first thing I've ever seen on IMAX, and it was quite the experience. The really huge screen makes movie watching an even more immersive experience than usual. I'm now having fantasies about the Lord of the Rings extended editions on IMAX.
I liked this Harry Potter movie much mohan the previous two, and I think it's mostly because of the direction. Unlike Chris Columbus, Cuaron actually has something to say. Columbus was able to make competent movies that were faithful to the look and feel of the books, but I feel like he was doing something more akin to paint-by-numbers. Cuaron, on the other hand, is more creative and deeper. The Prisoner of Azkaban had better pacing and flow, and a more meaningful visual sense. I forget who remarked in their LJ about time as a visual motif in the movie, but he or she was right. Plus, there was more emotional depth, more atmosphere, and more richness. The Prisoner of Azkaban is also my favorite book of the series so far, too, so I'm especially pleased that this one came out so well.
