by P. Djèlí Clark
This snappily paced novella is set in a city that is much like Venice, but if Venice was located in North Africa and had magic. Eveen is an undead assassin, part of the titular guild, and a servant of the goddess of assassins and cooks. When Eveen is sent out on a contract during the city's major festival, she finds herself embroiled in a much more complicated plot.
I really enjoyed this quick read. Eveen is a cool character - deadly and completely ok with her job, but not evil. The plot has some very clever aspects and the world is intriguing. I hope Clark writes more books in the setting.
