by Kelly Bowen
This historical romance deals beautifully with two people damaged by their pasts whose love for each other helps them move past their traumas. Eli Dawes survived the battle of Waterloo but is left with a only one eye and a scarred face and a scarred soul. He has returned to Dover and his manor Avondale to prepare to re-enter society and his old life. In his absence, the house has been rented to a summer school for ladies. Here, talented artist Rose Heyward spends a quiet life painting and teaching. She has retreated from society after being humiliated by her now deceased fiance, who was Eli's close friend. As Rose and Eli re-connect, the establish a deep friendship and fall equally deeply in love. Along the way, Rose challenges Eli to overcome his self-consciousness about his wounds and bitterness over his experiences in the war while Eli helps Rose overcome her fear of going out among people.
I really loved this novel. The emotional development of the characters and the depth of their relationship was beautifully done. Eli and Rose are both perceptive, strong people who complement and make each other better. The way they care for each other and challenge each other is terrific.
