by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson
Music Is History is a freewheeling and personal look at the last 50 years of popular music and American culture and history. The focus is very firmly on the music, with historical events functioning ore as a background context. Questlove also focuses on music made by Black Americans, especially those working in the soul, R&B, and hip-hop genres.
This books was a lot of fun to read. Questlove has a deep knowledge of his subject as well as a wealth of interesting things to say about it. He's exceptionally astute about finding connections between songs and artists, and those points were often the the highlights of each chapter. His writing also makes it so clear why and how music is deeply meaningful. This book has made me not only want to explore the songs and artists he covers but also listen to the songs I know and love with new ears.
