Morning Star
by Pierce Brown

This is the conclusion of the first Red Rising trilogy, and it's an action-packed ride with a pretty satisfying ending. I really enjoyed the development of Darrow's relationships with his friends and allies - the growth of a real ensemble cast is one of the great things about this series. The action sequences are very well written, too, and often involve creative and daring tactics. Brown does a great job of narrating planetary-scale battles in a way that feels just as personal and tactile as a medieval duel. While I do wish Brown has spent more time exploring the whole liberation and revolution basis for the plot, I did really appreciate that Darrow's victory over the Society ends with a hopeful but complicated and precarious situation rather than a glorious and utopian transformation.
