The Cambridge Companion to Verdi
edited by Scott L. Balthazar

This solid volume on Verdi was thoroughly informative and thought-provoking. The only dark spot was the tedious chapter comparing all the differences among the versions of Don Carlos. I especially enjoyed the essays on Ernani and the fluidity of the title character's identity, the Italian theatre of Verdi's time, structural coherence, and the ways Rigoletto subverts operatic character conventions.
