by Lewis Porter
I very much enjoyed this biography, as Coltrane is one of my favorite jazz musicians but I had previously known very little about him. His album My Favorite Things is still what I think of when I think of jazz. Porter's book is a little thin on the details of Coltrane's life, especially once he is an established artist. However, Porter does a beautiful job of delving into Coltrane's musical development and style, providing background on how and what he practiced as well as analysis of each period of his work and of select solos. Porter made me want to go listen to even more of Coltrane's work, and listen to the material I already know with new ears.
