In late 14th century London, a mysterious book of prophecies that includes a prediction of the murder of King Richard II comes to light and then disappears. Murder, intrigue, and conspiracy follow in the wake of the book. Poet and fixer of sorts John Gower is tasked with finding the book. The ensuing hunt leads Gower into dealings with the highest members of Richard's court as well as the prostitutes and tradesmen of the Southwark slums.
A Burnable Book is an enjoyable medieval thriller. It's very well-researched, and full of interesting details about life in 14th century London. The plot has lots of twists and turns, where mysteries are resolved only to replaced by further mysteries. It kept me guessing. I also really liked the juxtaposition of the highest echelons of medieval society with the lowest. I found the prostitutes Agnes, Millicent, and Edgar/Eleanor some of the most compelling characters in the book.
