Space Opera
by Catherynne Valente

It's the near future and Earth has finally been visited by aliens. In a turn of events emphatically not predicted by any popular sci-fi alien invasion novels or films, said aliens have come to infomr us that in order to prove that we are sentient beings worthy of a place in intergalactic society, we must compete in a song contest, or be annihilated for the good of the universe. The task of turning in a world-saving performance falls to washed up glam-rocker Decibel Jones and the remnants his band the Absolute Zeros.
Yes, it's Eurovision in space. It's as wacky and fun as you would expect. Valente peppers the story with plenty of pop-culture references and snarky commentary on humanity, both good and bad. It's a fun ride, although perhaps more popcorn and candy floss than meat and potatoes.
