This is the fifth and final book in the Abhorsen series, and it is very good finish for the series. The story picks up shortly after the events of Abhorsen and involve Lirael, Sabriel, Touchstone, and Sameth facing a new threat to the Old Kingdom, this time from the nomads of the northern steppes, who have long been under the power of an ancient and terrible necromancer. This new threat also brings in Sam's old friend from Ancelstierre, Nicholas Sayre, whose involvement in the events of the third book has left him imbued with a curious mixture of Charter and Free Magic.
The stakes were not as high in this book as in the previous ones, but the plot still had a lot of excitement and urgency. It also allowed for some excellent further exploration of the world and its nature. I also found the little romance between Lirael and Nick charming. It was sweet and realistically awkward, as both characters are rather inexperienced and unsure of themselves. I also enjoyed seeing Lirael, my favorite character in the series, becoming more confident and assured of herself and her place in the world.
