by Ellis Peters
This is the 20th and final Cadfael mystery. In it, Cadfael risks his vocation and his place in the abbey at Shrewsbury to undertake an uncertain mission to rescue his son Olivier from captivity. This mission brings him right into the thick of some of the thornier aspects of the conflict between Stephen and Matilda, as he must contend with the consequences of shifting loyalties and the constant threat of death and destruction. Oh, and there's a murder, although the crime serves more to set up and further aspects of the main plot than to drive it.
I found this last book in the series extremely satisfying. The story had a lot of layers to it, as well as nice twists and turns. Peters really delves into the nature of father-son relationships, the senselessness of warfare, and Cadfael's vocation. It is a great way to end the series and a wonderful books in its own right.
