This sci-fi novel about aliens visiting Earth is set in Lagos, Nigeria, where an alien craft has landed in the lagoon at Bar Beach. Adaora, a marine biologist, Agu, a soldier, and Anthony, a rap star, are the first witnesses of the ship and the first to interact with the aliens. While Adaora, Agu, and Anthony's story is the main thread, we also see the effect the aliens have on a wide variety of Lagosians, from the president of Nigeria down to petty thieves and scammers.
Lagoon is a very enjoyable and very unusual novel. Okorafor eschews certain conventions of first contact stories and even of a lot of sci-fi. Nothing is orderly or contained here. She shows us all hell breaking loose due to the multiplicity of reactions and agendas people have when confronted with aliens. It makes the novel a bit chaotic, but Okorafor keeps it all very coherent and well-paced. I'll be chewing on this one for quite some time.
