by Rebecca Solnit
(I read the expanded edition with two extra essays)
This book of feminist essays by Rebecca Solnit was wonderful, if often sobering. She tackles not only the phenomenon of "mansplaining" but also the global epidemic of rape and domestic assault, the implications of marriage equality for traditional gender roles, and other important issues. I really admired her insight and pointed use of humor even in the midst of discussing very serious subjects. Solnit's gift for poetic turns of phrase also made these essays enjoyable to read even when the topics were troubling.
