by Scott Lynch
Red Seas Under Red Skies is the sequel to The Lies of Locke Lamora, picking up two years after the events of the first book. Locke and Jean are now in the southern city of Tal Verrar which sits on an artificial archipelago. In this very hierarchical and stratified city, Locke and Jean are in the midst of a complicated casino heist that has required them to play a very long game. While approaching the culmination of their plans, they are roped into an equally complicated plot of politics and piracy.
Red Seas Under Red Skies provides as much adventure and clever plotting as its predecessor, even if it does feel somewhat less focused. Having two schemes in play at once does dilute some of the excitement, but does give Lynch a good chance to show more of just how skilled and fast-thinking Locke and Jean are at thieving, heists, and con artistry. A big plus for this book is the increase in emotional weight given to the characters, their relationships, and especially the development of those relationships.
