by Philip Pullman
In this sequel to The golden Compass, Lyra has crossed over into another world and met Will, a boy who has made his way into this other world from our modern day world. Lyra is looking for more information about Dust and Will is seeking both his father and safety. What they find instead is the weapon of the title as well as more about Dust and what larger events they are now involved in.
While this is very much the middle book of a trilogy and thus drives the plot along without resolving or revealing much of anything, Pullman still does a great job with the pacing and world-building. Lyra and Will develop a genuine bond, and we see both of them start to mature. New dangers, allies, and enemies are introduced and things get more complicated. I'm really interested in seeing where all of this is going.
