by Wendy Heller
This is the third in the Western Music in Context series, and it was just about as good as the first two. Heller does an excellent job of making the Baroque music scene come alive, and at exploring all its tensions and tumult. She makes it very clear that, as in many other areas, the Baroque era was one of great change for musical life in Europe, ushering in the modern age. Of particular interest are the rise of opera and the growing prominence of instrumental music.I also really liked the way Heller highlighted several of the lesser known figures of the Baroque, like Heinrich Biber and Arcangelo Corelli.
